“We know what happens when health care providers cannot use Title X funding: People across the country suffer, cancers go undetected, access to birth control is severely reduced, and the nation’s STI crisis worsens,” Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said in a statement.

Dr Katy Sinka, consultant epidemiologist and head of the STI section at UK Health Security Agency, said it was "really promising" to see a successful trial for a new antibiotic to treat gonorrhoea.

That includes gay and bisexual men and people who have had an STI in the past.

In the trial of 164 couples with BV, the researchers achieved higher cure rates by treating BV as an STI, with both sexual partners - rather than just the woman - given antibiotics.

The NHS currently says BV is caused by "a change in the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina and is not an STI", even though it can be triggered by sex.
