The poverty, lack of support system, childhood trauma, domestic abuse, financial and legal problems that sent people into homelessness in the first place won’t just vanish in new housing.

Their efforts have led to "meaningful changes in culture, teaching practices and student support systems", the council said.

Along with talking to a grief counselor or therapist, seeking out a support system can be vital.

“These women were their support system that made our family’s success possible. They all struggled. My mom remembered that. So she taught us you always have to give back — always, always, always.”
