However Liam English from the Trade Union Usdaw, which represents shop-workers, said it was "very disappointed" at the council's decision.

Weetabix said it was "naturally disappointed" by Usdaw's decision and said it continued to "invest in our people and offer competitive salaries".

Gavin Dadley, Usdaw's regional secretary, said the negotiations had so far "not achieved an offer that could be recommended to the membership".

USDAW's Daniel Adams said the above-inflation raise "ensures a meaningful gap between the Tesco rates of pay and the National Living Wage in April".

The Usdaw union said it was "delighted to get this outcome".
