At the request of Ukraine's Constitutional Court, the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe issued an opinion on alternative service in Ukraine in March 2025.

It is overseen by the Council of Europe, which is separate to the European Union but is made up of members including EU countries, the UK, Turkey and Ukraine.

Earlier this month the head of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, told the Times newspaper he recognised the convention needed to "adapt" to a changing world.

Esme Ward, director of the Manchester Museum, accepted the award at a ceremony at the Sybir Memorial Museum in Białistok, Poland - winner of the Council of Europe Museum Prize last year.

The Council of Europe's parliamentary assembly has called on Turkish authorities to drop the charges and release him immediately.
