The Togolese leader, Faure Gnassingbé, has been sworn in as "President of the Council of Ministers" - a new post which is the highest office in the government's executive branch and has no official term limits.

Residents will vote to elect a local assembly, led by a chief minister and council of ministers.

Mr Macron talked about the Courbevoie attack during a Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday, where he meets with the members of his government.

“The president has accepted the resignation and requested Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue till the new government assumes office,” the president’s office said in a statement.

Their removal would enable him to remain president until 2031, they said, after which he would be appointed to the new position of "president of the council of ministers" - in effect prime minister - continuing his family's 57-year rule.
