Sophie Ellman-Golan, strategic communications director at Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, knows this well: She was leading communications for the Women’s March in 2018, when the organization came under fire for leader Tamika Mallory’s ties to noted antisemite Louis Farrakhan.

But Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan was not running for office.

Now, contemplate what it welcomed into its midst Wednesday as you take in what else Farrakhan said to its members in Nashville 28 years ago.

At least Farrakhan said something worth remembering, and true — a call to refuse framing damaging acts as business as usual, by saying, "This is what we've always done."

The Nation of Islam had sued the Anti-Defamation League and Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center for $4.8 billion, claiming the Jewish organizations had violated the Nation of Islam’s 1st Amendment rights by calling Farrakhan’s frequent unflattering comments about Jews “antisemitic.”
