The Shakespeare Theatre Company's Simon Godwin will direct the production, eight years after he brought Fiennes and Varma together for Man and Superman at the National Theatre.

Liverpool theater director William Armstrong saw him running a dress rehearsal and helped kick-start Mr. Brook’s career by recommending him to the Birmingham Repertory, where Mr. Brook made his debut in 1945 directing Shaw’s “Man and Superman.”

There, Mr. Brook successfully directed Shaw’s “Man and Superman” and Shakespeare’s “King John,” and formed a professional bond with Paul Scofield, who had a leading role in each play.

It is maddening when I cannot lay my hands on George Bernard Shaw’s “Man and Superman,” though I know very well that I do have a copy.
