The fiberglass-and-steel statue of the god, Manannan Mac Lir, was installed only last year, as part of a walking trail with sculptures, and had become a popular tourist attraction.

The Irish name Manannan derives from an earlier name for the Isle of Man, and festival organisers said they wanted "a Celtic connection with the move to Wales".

It has been suggested that this Grey Man is one of the old gods, possibly Manannan, the Irish sea-god.

Like Manannan, he conducted the souls of men to the Otherworld of the gods, and then brought them back to the human world.
