In Kansas, the NWS outfit in Goodland cut its own operating hours just a couple of days before the tornadoes landed.

Earlier this month, the NWS put out a hiring call for dozens of meteorologists and staffers to fill in vacant positions at its field offices, including permanent meteorologists-in-charge for the aforementioned Jackson and Goodland outposts.

Temperatures Sunday are forecast to be in the 80s across the L.A.basin, in the 90s in the valleys, and in the high 60s to mid 70s on beaches, said NWS meteorologist Mike Wofford.

On X, the NWS said forecasters were monitoring the “remote possibility” for “small, weak, brief” tornadoes on Thursday,

“The now-confirmed and rumored additional cuts to come at NOAA/NWS are spectacularly short-sighted, and ultimately will deal a major self-inflected wound to the public safety of Americans and the resiliency of the American economy to weather and climate-related disasters.”
